| This is like my first film essay from the first day or two of film class...
Writing prompt 2: Legendary film: X-Men
The X-Men movie is a beyond good, a legendary film for its time. Being highly based off of the comics, the skill of the actors and the action alone made it legendary. Considering how it was able to stay with the comics without any major changes that usually happened during the screen writting process. The actors chosen for the roles were all highly respected actors and the ones who were not as well known were given a jump start to a great career. The actors had to go further then just knowing how to use their pretend “gifts” they had to at least appear to able to fight with them. The whole X-Men trilogy is legendary just looking at the amount of money brought to the boxoffice, it was made to be this awesome movie and theres no agruing it.
Sometimes when a movie is based off of a comic it can be its downfall but for the X-Men trilogy, the movies were such a big hit that they were able to go further then the three X-Men movies to create more spin-offs. The Hulk movie that came out in 2003 left Hulk fans devasted. Most fans left the movie depressed over the fact that this epic movie based on an epic character crashed and burned so badly. The film wasn’t at all based on the comics and created an upset comic-fan audition. Part of the comics that made Marvel so popular was how people could relate with the characters and this feeling had to be brought into the movies. As Uncanny X-Men writer, Chris Claremont said in an interview, the X-Men are hated based only on the fact that they are mutants. The hate that they felt was brought back to life through out each movie, creating a feeling for the characters that is not easy to create in 100 minutes. The director and writers choose to work with Stan Lee and other X-Men writers so the story could be perfect. Stan Lee willingly helped with each film letting the company create this epic film. Several mavrel based films have been slaughtered by fans for failing to keep with the comic, something that the X-Men trilogy proudly avoid.

| Movies originally based off of comics or books in general are difficult to translate into a full length movie. Usually they will become a huge success with or without following the comics as the X men trilogy had. The Watchmen movie followed the comics almost panel to panel with a more updated ending. The X men trilogy just took bits and pieces from the comics and created four different movies from it.Both movies needed extremely good actors who would be able to not only look the role but become the character and pick up on the little things that fans would notice. Each movie also was able to keep the comic book fans coming back but also get new fans into the comics. The directors, Bryan Singer of X-Men and Zack Snyder of Watchmen used extreme directing angles to change the audience's view on the characters and the movies. Both movies took different paths from the comic to creating the movies and both came out huge successes.
Bryan Singer and Zack Snyder used extreme shots and angles to get the story to the audience. Wolverine is only 5'2 in the comics while Hugh Jackman stands more then a foot taller then the actual character. The director chose an actor that caused him to have odd camera angles so Wolverine would not stand taller then Cyclops like in the comics. Zach Snyder followed the comics panel to panel. His camera angles might have not have been as extreme but they were the same. The image of Rorschach picking up the Comedian's pin is a bit different of an angle that was needed to be kept the same. Each also had to create whole new panels between the panels. In the beginning of the movie with the fight between the Comedian and the 'burglar,' he freezes action scenes to give the punches more power. Both directors used these shots and angles to tell the story with enough of their own touch to connect the movie to the comics.
The X men movies took ideas from different plot lines from the comics, and just threw them all together to make the movies. While Watchmen on the other hand, followed the comics nearly panel to panel with a more updated ending that American viewers today would enjoy more. The directors, Bryan Singer and Zack Snyder both chose extremely good actors who were able to do more then just read the lines by bring the characters to life. They also used different directing styles to get their message out to the audience. Both movies were so amazing that they were able to keep the comic book fans happy while still getting new fans with every movie. The movies are surprisingly well done given the difficulty of the comic to movie genre. | |
